The journey.....................................

marathon of life: How did all this begin?

Dioko in greek means to follow or press hard after, to pursue with earnestness and diligence in order to obtain, to go after with the desire of obtaining.

marathon of life: Surviving a brain tumor

As we face many storms faith is like an anchor that keeps us from drifting and casting away in order to continue our journey, sometimes facing frightening waves, sometimes on dry desert land or cold inhospitable weather .

Marathon of life: Finding out about Epylepsy

At least I knew what was attacking my body I knew what was happening yet it was so painful. Thyrotoxic episodes were exacerbating seizures.

In patients with established epilepsy (including generalized epilepsy syndromes), seizures and paroxysmal EEG abnormalities can be exacerbated by hyperthyroidism In other patients, focal or generalized seizures occur only during thyrotoxic episodes. Seizure exacerbations usually remit when patients become euthyroid with treatment.

Tiny Great Miracles of God's Creation: Hummingbirds

Photo by my son Jaime Mejia a couple of years ago

A little hummingbird flew around me this morning, it reminded me of tinkerbell, I looked around in awe trying to follow its flight around my head. I left for work, feeling happy and strong. I decided to investigate more about these little beauties I like so much.

Jewels: precious possessions of great worth; rare excellence; great durability.

Precious: of great price or value; excessively delicate; of great spiritual worth.

They are of great calming of my soul adding to the great wonders of god and nature,
also likes to put things into perspective.
They can give you encouragement and strength because they always just keep on going.
They are pure pleasure how they zoom in and hover around the feeders and flowers.

Hummingbirds have three primary states, sitting, hovering and flying,

It's "Ruby Throated" Tuesday!, originally uploaded by MrClean1982.

The hummingbird shows us how to take great pleasure in spreading joy and love and beauty to all around us; we can then take that inner joy into new and different surroundings.

The hummingbird brings us the gift of beauty. The ruby throated hummingbird is one of the most common species in North America. This energetic little bird migrates 1800 miles from the Eastern US to spend winter in Central America. This distance alone indicates the hummingbirds stamina and perseverance. They can show us how to go the distance without becoming depleted.

Hummingbirds instinctively know how to use flowers for healing and teaches us how to draw the life essence from them to create our own medicines - as in our usage of flower essences, essential oils and herbal tinctures. Hummingbird reminds us that if we find joy in what we do, we become light as a feather, and life is rich with nectar.

The Ruby-throated hummingbird teaches is that becoming fat can be beneficial if it is necessary as an energy buffer to survive. The second lesson is that fat birds with very high plasma glucose levels do not become diabetic. Part of the preventative mechanism is anatomical and physiological. Nectar feeding birds are unusual in that they consume large amounts of water along with the sugars they typically consume. Birds have a relatively low glomerular filtration rate and are able to reabsorb essentially all of the glucose that is filtered into the urine . It is not clear how they avoid showing symptoms of "glucose toxicity" such as glycated hemoglobin, but the levels of hemoglobin A1c are lower than in humans. One hypothesis could be that the turnover rates of red blood cells and proteins are substantially higher in birds than in mammals. For example, the lifespan of red blood cells in birds can be 21 days or less vs. about 120 days for humans, so there may be less opportunity for glycation. Turnover rates for metabolic pools are thought to be proportional to body mass to the 1/4 power , which would indicate that metabolic pools exchange about 12 times faster in hummingbirds than in humans (Kleiber, p. 216 and 390). This is congruent with the high ATP turnover rate in active muscle . Whether or not birds avoid obesity and diabetes by dint of their rates of living, the neurobiology and endocrinology of avian fat deposition are complex, and students of migratory birds have suggested that they could offer important clues concerning prevention of obesity and diabetes in humans .
Diabetes and the metabolic syndrome are rightfully considered to be kinetic disorders that do not develop unless several major controls fail. Typically, sensitivity to insulin and to glucose ("glucose effectiveness") both diminish, creating insulin resistance . Hepatic glucose production may continue (instead of shutting off) even if plasma glucose and insulin are both elevated. The rate of production of insulin by the beta cell must also fail to compensate for the decreased sensitivity . These are conditions that come about in humans because of sedentary habits and obesity . In migrating birds, there may be a decline in insulin sensitivity, but it is unlikely that regulation of beta cell function or hepatic glucose production becomes abnormal. Hummingbirds combat kinetic disorders by dint of their highly aerobic lifestyles and necessity of maintaining close feedback between energy intake and energy expenditure. Unlike humans who have "uncoupled" food intake from functional needs, animals that must flap their wings at 50 beats per second in order to feed have a hard time staying fat.

What is awesome about humming birds is that aerodynamically, these birds are not able to fly, and yet they do!

As scientists try to figure out how hummingbirds are flying, I think God is smiling. It's just another thing only The Creator knows, and that's fine with me. Life should have some mystery, don't you think?

Brain Inflammation in Epilepsy

Inflammatory reactions occur in the brain in various CNS diseases, including autoimmune, neurodegenerative, and epileptic disorders. Proinflammatory and antiinflammatory cytokines and related molecules have been described in CNS and plasma, in experimental models of seizures and in clinical cases of epilepsy. Inflammation involves both the innate and the adaptive immune systems and shares molecules and pathways also activated by systemic infection. Experimental studies in rodents show that inflammatory reactions in the brain can enhance neuronal excitability, impair cell survival, and increase the permeability of the blood–brain barrier to blood-borne molecules and cells. Moreover, some antiinflammatory treatments reduce seizures in experimental models and, in some instances, in clinical cases of epilepsy.

Neurodegenerative diseases: COX-2 on the brain

Elevated levels of the inflammation-associated enzyme cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) — and those of its product, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) — have been implicated in neurodegeneration.

Neurons overexpressing COX-2 could cause their own death, by synthesizing excess amounts of PGE2 that result in the production of micro-glial-derived mediators, which then aid the killing of the neurons. Alternatively, COX-2 could cause cell death in a cell-autonomous manner through the production of reactive oxygen species generated by the catalytic activity of COX-2, which in turn can result in oxidants such as dopamine-quinone. The authors suggest that the neuroprotective effect of COX-2 inhibition could result from mitigating the oxidative damage caused by dopamine-quinone, which has previously been implicated in PD.

Gamma-mangostin has been proven to be a very effective anti-inflammatory agent.Scientists have shown that it significantly slowed down the body's production of the cyclo-oxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzyme, a key player in inflammatory conditions and the enzyme arthritis prescription drugs fight against.Controlling COX-2 production has been found to be an important factor in reducing inflammation and pain.

Mangosteen (Mangostan), originally uploaded by Åsta.
Today I saw a fruit in the store I've only read about: The Mangosteen, also called the Queen of Fruits! Of course I had to buy a couple! Inside, it looked like a garlic or white tangerine. On this pic, I've eaten a couple of "cloves". Sweet, but still fresh! Yum!

The fruit hull of mangosteen, Garcinia mangostana, has been widely used as an
anti-inflammatory medicine in South East Asia for many years (Mahabusarakam et al.,
1987)
. γ-Mangostin is one of main constituents contained in the fruit hull of
mangosteen. In the present study, it was revealed that a long-term treatment with
γ-mangostin effectively reduced spontaneous PGE2 release from C6 rat glioma cells
which was shown to be appreciably inhibited by NS398, a selective COX-2 inhibitor,
without affecting the cell viability, and that this natural product, like aspirin (Yin et al.,
1999), inhibited IKK activity in vitro, and consistently reduced LPS-induced
NF-κB-dependent transcriptional activation responsible for COX-2 gene transcription,
which resulted in the decrease in LPS-induced COX-2 gene expression in C6 cells.
Moreover, expectedly, γ-mangostin was shown to prevent rat carrageenan-induced hind
paw edema used as an acute model of inflammation. It is thus suggested that
γ-mangostin serves as not only a potent inhibitor of the release of an inflammatory
chemical mediator, PGE2, but also a new inhibitor of COX-2 gene activation, and as a
result, acts as an anti-inflammatory agent in vivo.

Pineal gland, ultradian drives in Narcolepsy

My ultradian cycle seems to be adjusting itself, my epilepsy med was increased and I have been practicing the relaxation techniques the therapist is showing me.
I didn't have daytime sleeping episodes this week. last week I was totally out one complete day and night.
Anyway people are telling me I look much better now.

Narcolepsy is characterized, beside other features, by excessive daytime sleepiness and disturbed sleep at night. The pineal hormone melatonin may affect the sleep characteristics. The aim of the study was to compare the circadian rhythm in salivary melatonin in narcoleptic patients with that in control healthy subjects; 18 patients and 21 age- and gender-matched controls were involved. Narcoleptic patients exhibited a nocturnal increase in salivary melatonin similar to the one in control subjects. The morning melatonin decline in the narcoleptic group, as opposed to the control group was, however, not significant, as 8 out of 18 patients exhibited elevated melatonin levels also during the day. In these patients, the mean daytime value of the multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) was decreased when compared with that in patients with undetectable daytime melatonin levels. The results suggest that in some narcoleptic patients the circadian rhythm might be disturbed.

Narcoleptics showed an ultradian distribution of SWA with periodic emergence every 4 h during DT and N2. Our data confirm that a homeostatic mechanism is evident in narcoleptics when stimulated by diurnal sleep deprivation, while circadian and circasemidian mechanisms are less evident during DT and N2. These findings suggest a different coupling between homeostatic sleep regulating processes and circadian drives to sleep in narcoleptics. Ultradian drives to sleep seem to be predominant in these patients, thus probably acting as a means for the avoidance of stressful attempts to counteract a weaker waking state maintenance mechanism.

God's Life brings comfort and Peace

Do you sometimes feel like giving up? Does it seem like the journey is too difficult and that everyone is out to get you? Do you just want to lie down somewhere and hide from your troubles? This is the way Elijah felt. He had done a mighty work for God, but it seemed like he was the only one in the nation of Israel being true to God. Now he was being pursued and hunted, and he just felt like the fight wasn’t worth all the effort. If you’ve ever felt that way, you can learn from the example of Elijah. These verses give us important instruction as to what God would have us do when we feel like quitting.

Elijah, 1 Kings 19:4

Verses 5-6

And he lay down and slept under a broom tree; and behold, an angel touched him, and said to him, "Arise and eat."

And he looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on hot stones and a jar of water. And he ate and drank, and lay down again.

Verses 7-8

And the angel of the Lord came again a second time, and touched him, and said, "Arise and eat, else the journey will be too great for you."

And he arose, and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb the mount of God.

It has been my prayer to have an angel of the Lord wake me up from those pathetic sleeping episodes. I have been feeding my spirit and feel ready for a new beginning

vitamin D, thyroid hormone and light

It's very important to get to know your body and have a very close supervision of your TSH levels.
Vitamin C enhances levotyroxine absorption so you have to be careful about that. I figure I should drink orange juice in the winter when I'm totally on the hypothyroid side.
I had a really rough time last year when I was totally hyper and the appointment with the endo was months away. I have learned not to wait for appointments the Social Security Clinics when you are feeling really sick. Frequent blood test can really make a difference. In Mexico you can order them yourself.

Vitamin D and thyroid hormone bind to similar receptors called steroid hormone receptors. A different gene in the Vitamin D receptor was shown to predispose people to autoimmune thyroid disease including Graves’ disease and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. For these reasons, it is important for patients with thyroid problems to understand how the vitamin D system works.

Sources of Vitamin D
Vitamin D is really two different compounds, ergocalciferol (vitamin D2), found mainly in plants and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3), found mainly in animals. Both of these hormones are collectively referred to as vitamin D, and they can either be obtained in two ways. One is by exposure of the skin to the ultraviolet (UV) rays of sunlight or also from dietary intake.

Vitamin D is found naturally in fish (such as salmon and sardines) and fish oils, eggs and cod liver oil. However most Vitamin D is obtained from foods fortified with Vitamin D, especially milk and orange juice.

Orange Juice , originally uploaded by Rooody ©.

What about some orange juice? It's rich in vitamin C

Taking vitamin C along with levothyroxine reduced TSH levels substantially, by as much as 27%. Taking the levothyroxine along with 1 gram of vitamin C mixed with water over a period of six weeks was able to help the majority of patients achieve their TSH target level. The researchers concluded that vitamin C can enhance oral absorption of levothyroxine, and taking vitamin C along with levothyroxine medications should be considered in patients with difficulties in the absorption of levothyroxine.

So, if you're not able to get your thyroid problem under control, talk to your doctor about the possibility of using supplemental vitamin C along with your thyroid medication.

Spring is here

Seasonal change is all around us. It definitely affects all living beings, we are all connected to the wonders of nature.
As I flow with the season of renewal I can only marvel at the wonders of God's creation the singing of birds by my window provide relaxing sounds to soothe my spirit.

Study sheds light on why birds burst into song as spring arrives
patgarcia at NowPublic

Throughout history, their singing has fascinated authors, poets and songwriters – particularly as birdsong is so closely associated with the the end of winter. Now scientists believe they have found a vital clue to explain the rise of the spring dawn chorus.

Ultradian cycles

When you learn how to recognize your need to take a 20 minute break you can convert your stress into what I call The Ultradian Healing Response - Its that wonderful feeling of comfort and well being that you naturally have when you are tired but let yourself have the freedom to take well deserved rest.

2. What does a 20 minute break have to do with stress and health?

There is an entirely new way of understanding what stress actually is! Stress is nature's signal that we are getting too high on our stress hormones (eg. cortisol, adrenaline) and be need to take a healing break. If we don't we fall into the many psychosomatic symptoms of the ultradian stress response.

Taking a 20 minute healing break allows your mind and body to recover - it more than just a luxury to feel good! Your mind and body needs a chance to build up its internal supplies of available energy -to clear up the backlog of unfinished business and gear up for another hour and a half of good work, play and health. The Ultradian Healing Response allows you to optimize your health as well as your performance and creativity.

About every 90-120 minutes, your body goes through a rhythm that involves cell division, gene replication, hormone secretion, brain chemical release, and brain hemisphere dominance. These are rhythms that occur many times every day. During a typical 90-minute energy cycle, your brain will experience both a peak of heightened alertness and high performance followed by a trough of mental fatigue and the desire to take a break.

These peaks and troughs affect your performance in a wide range of mental activities, including your ability to concentrate, focus, learn, use short-memory, perceive and be creative, as well as your athletic ability, hand-eye coordination, reflexes, dexterity, and general energy level.

In other words, during each 90- to 120-minute ultradian rhythm, you will experience a 20-minute period in which your brain power seems to diminish considerable, no matter how smart you are.

These 20-minute lows of right-brain functioning happen automatically. In fact, nearly all your major mind-body systems that are self-regulating — such as nervous, endocrine, and immune systems — participate in this 90- to 120-minute cycle of rest and activity. Mental skills rise and fall according to these rhythms.

Circadian rhythms:

(circa = approx & diem = day) go over 24hrs. Humans demonstrate a series of changes including temperature heart respiration and metabolism over this period. We (psychologists) are most interested in the sleep-wake cycle.

Ultradian rhythms:

(Meaning less than one day) Sleep is a good example of an ultradian rhythm, as you sleep you pass through differing stages of sleep (e.g. light and deep sleep lasting about 90 minutes.)

Infradian rhythm: (meaning more than 1 day). An example of a infradian rhythm would be a woman's menstrual cycle which lasts for 28 days.

A circannial cycle occurs yearly/annually. An example of this would be non human animals hibernation and waking patterns

Pineal melatonin plays a major role in affective disorders such as Seasonal Affective Disorder and Binge Eating Disorder. These are just two disorders in which a single or a combination of maladies often couples with radical departures from normal behavior. Depression and self-imposed isolation are accompanied with little or no regulation of day/night cycles - a circadian rhythm - and are symptomatic of melatonin imbalance. These disorders are often resolved when circadian rhythm is restored. While circadian rhythm can be restored in a number of ways, Interactive Light Therapy that resets the biological clock is one way to induce a melatonin response as can the administration of endogenous melatonin. Sham or functional pinealectomy has also been an intervention that restores a circadian rhythm. Research has also demonstrated that the extent and action of pineal melatonin at certain melatonin receptors may account for its reputed oncostatic and immunological effects as experiments worldwide have cemented the relationship between neuroendocrine and immune systems. Other studies indicate that melatonin inhibits tumor growth when combined with Interluken-2, as it appears to restore a circadian rhythm in those with small cell cancers, thereby pointing to a somewhat direct relationship with the pineal gland. If this were so, it would be possible that a diseased gland that does not effectively control the synthesis of melatonin might do so if treated with IL-2.

Ultradian rythm and Spring

The ultradian rhythm imitates the cycle of the seasons with different phases representing spring (arousal), summer (peak performance), fall (stress) and winter (rest). You know that you have reached the down part of the cycle when you start to get restless, your mind wanders, you get hungry or feel you need a bathroom break. Many of us, however, drive ourselves straight through this portion of the cycle, trying to get more work done, or spend our lunch hour running errands or talking to a friend, when we might be better off sitting and staring out the window.

Spiritual means Healthier, Researcher Says
_MG_4248

I have experienced the power of prayer uncountable times in my life, a new perspective of it was uncovered before my eyes the moment one of my doctors recomendend to pray 20 minutes everyday for healing reasons, to produce endorphins that will help balance my cortisol production and inmune system.

“A number of studies have shown a positive relationship between participatory prayer and lower rates of heart disease, cirrhosis, emphysema and stroke in adults,” he says. “Prayer has been shown to correlate to lower blood pressure, cortisol levels, rates of depression, as well as increased rates of self-described well being.”

“But very few studies have attempted to examine how children’s spiritual beliefs impact their health,” he says. Initially, Nierenberg conducted a study of HIV positive pediatric patients (ages seven to 17), comparing religious development, church attendance and prayer to health measures such as symptoms, T-cell counts and number of hospitalizations."

Leslie Kats also discovered a new source of endorphins in her life- prayer.
Just like running causes the brain to release chemicals that act as analgesics, so does prayer.
Sitting in synagogue on a Shabbat morning earlier this month, it hit me. Praying, at least for me, is a lot like running.

At first, I feel a bit stiff. I hear the words without really hearing, say them without really saying. At times I'll recite an entire prayer without stopping to consider what, exactly, is coming out of my mouth.

Then at some point, a line will jump out at me. An incantation will comfort me. Sometimes I'll have just a few moments of illumination, sometimes many. I'll often leave a service feeling renewed and unencumbered, confident that life is unfolding just the way it should.

In her "Torah Thoughts" column earlier this month, Rabbi Amy Eilberg wrote, "I don't understand how prayer works, though I know that it does."

I agree, though such mysteries are challenging for an overly analytical sort like me. I like to know exactly why I feel what I feel and why I do what I do.

May the blessing of light be upon you, light on the outside, light on the inside
With God's sunlight shining on you, may your heart glow with
warmth like a turf fire that welcomes friends and strangers alike.

May the light of the Lord shine from your eyes
like a candle in the window welcoming the weary traveller.

May the blessing of God's soft rain be on you,
falling gently on your head refreshing your soul with
the sweetness of little flowers newly blooming.

May the strength of the winds of heaven bless you,
carrying the rain to wash your spirit clean, sparkling after, in the sunlight.

May the blessing of God's earth be on you, and as you walk the roads,
may you always have a kind word for those you meet.

May you understand the strength and power of God in a thunderstorm in winter
and the quiet beauty of creation in the calm of a summer sunset
and may you come to realize that insignificant as you may seem in this great universe,
you are an important part of God's plan.

May He watch over you and keep you safe from harm.

Depression in epilepsy and thyroid

Why am I posting about depression today? I had my EEG results on Friday, It shows temporal lobe epilepsy so my medication was increased. I practically stayed in bed Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Depression seems to always sneak up on me. I have to get up from that heaviness.

Wrapped in His Love
Linda Harris-Iorio
"Put on a Garment of Praise Instead of a Spirit of Heaviness."

Isaiah 61:3.
To appoint to them that mourn in Zion, to give to them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.

ScienceDaily (Mar. 17, 2009) — A new study finds that the prevalence of depression is almost twice as high in people with epilepsy compared to the general population. Among those with epilepsy, racial minorities have seven times the odds of depression in comparison to the majority Caucasian population. The findings also show that 40 percent of depressed respondents with epilepsy were not accessing mental healthcare services.

Thyroid and Emotions

Posted by rhondascooking on March 17, 2009

They thyroid imbalance has the potential to cause a person to become depressed. (I have several books written by numerous doctors to validate my claims–I’ll share that later.) Though I have been on this journey now for about 15 years, I have cycles too that seem to align with a woman’s cycle of life that throws me off. I can recall feeling the same way at 30 and then at 35, but because there’s so much time between the two periods sometimes I don’t recognize that my thyroid is off, until I get really low, which by then I am depressed and angry. I was so depressed and angry that I wasn’t seeing any results that I stopped taking my thyroid supplements. Yes, I did! I felt that they weren’t as effective and I was tired of the doctors “trying things”. After all, I got a Master’s Degree for doing research, I can try things too. Against my doctor’s wishes, I stopped taking the supplements and he supported me with 1 condition that if I continue to gain weight and get sluggish, I have to start back in a month. Well, guess what? I continued to gain weight even with burning 400 - 500 calories 5 days per week with a strict diet! In 1 month, I gained the 12 pounds that I had lost 2 months prior!!! Now wouldn’t you get depressed on that?!!

If you are feeling similar to my feelings, don’t give up, don’t get depressed or frustrated. It may not be you, it could be your thyroid imbalance. If you haven’t been seeing a doctor, please schedule an appointment now. Everyone needs support when fighting against this disease! I learned this after 15 years!

Dolphins in my dreams

Like images in my dreams

Intelligent, Emotional, Ingenious

We can sure learn a lot from Dolphins

The dolphin is a symbol of joy, of being able to 'go with the flow' of life, free from worry. It is significant that they are mammals that live in water because water and the oceans are symbolic of our deeper emotions and the cosmic ocean of life. Dolphins play, leap, twist and turn in these waters, and so as a symbol they represent the ability for us to release limitations, and then accept and enjoy our deeper spiritual nature. Dolphins do not dwell on the meaning of life, they simply live life to the full as a part of the cosmic dance. You should wear the symbol of dolphin as a way of showing your intention to become more at one with the breath of life (that is the spiritual nature of life) and to promote a connection with laughter, joyful release and the ability to give of yourself freely to others.

”Now behold, an angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shone in the prison; and he struck Peter on the side and raised him up, saying, “Arise quickly!” And his chains fell off his hands.” Acts 12:7

God’s Spirit can guide and teach us through his word in such surprising ways.

In Isaiah 55:11, God says that wherever He sends His word it never returns empty, but always achieves the special purpose for which it was sent. Perhaps God sent this word to you today?

When God sends a message to us through scripture it is never by accident. In Isaiah 55:11, God says that wherever He sends His word it never returns empty, but always achieves the special purpose for which it was sent.

Prayerfully consider the verse that inspired this painting and know that the Mighty God of all the heavens has reached out to touch you this moment.

"I found your articles interesting to read. You had verious topics and many clinical studies to learn about. It shows how messed up this world is with illness and disease. It is nice to see a site that people can share their story with one another."

"This is a very well designed blog with great content..I would like to help you with your problems, rather then see you live with them. A man with a 3rd stage prostate cancer was treated and reversed in 3 weeks. The clinic that does these things like this is in Educador."
